Abstract
In the spring of 1863, the Civil War was going badly for the North. President Lincoln needed a victory to revive moral of the North. The navy decided the capture of Charleston, South Carolina, considered by both the North and South as the “incarnation of the rebellion”, would be such a victory. Accordingly, plans were made to attempt such a campaign. This account describes the action of the Union Navy in its attempt to capture the city from April 6 through September 8, 1863.
