Abstract
Intellectual influence is a critical notion in many fields, and yet an adequate definition has not been developed. The problem of deviant causal chains is the major obstacle. Our discussion illustrates how conceptual analysis can contribute to thickening the thin descriptions that are developed from applications of computational methods in the humanities.
