Abstract
The research aims to examine the experiences of first- generation daughters of immigrants as they navigate school choice in a market- based school system in Chicago. limited research exists on immigrant parents the potential barriers that may impact their involvement in the process and how students are compensating by developing resilience and accessing their social capital. Drawing on the cases of four Latina students through Testimonios in a yearlong study of First generation children of immigrants from Mexico and Colombia, I illuminate that contrary to what has often been assumed, about Latinx parents lack of educational support the findings indicate that parents do make an effort to provide support for their students, but face language and technology barriers that impede parents from providing the support necessary. With parents being unable to provide full support the participants fostered resilience and completed their own research, they sought out external support and used their social capital for advice on the GOCPS process. Other participants were able to seek out support from older siblings, students all showed a process of adultification taking the process into their own hands to ensure they successfully submitted their application.
