"In 1936 the first number of the Manual series of the Natural History Survey Division appeared. It was titled the Fieldbook of Illinois Wild Flowers. This was followed in 1939 by the Fieldbook of Illinois Land Snails, and in 1942 by the Fieldbook of Native Illinois Shrubs. These were developed under the charge in the Illinois statute which directs the Board of Natural Resources and Conservation, under which this Survey operates, ""To publish, from time to time, reports covering the entire field of zoology and botany of the State."" That these manuals have served a useful purpose is obvious in the constant demand for them. The Fieldbook of Illinois Wild Flowers has long been out of print, and a revised edition is now in preparation."
