Abstract
Mild steel, thick-walled cylinders are overstrained by internal fluid pressure. Light interferometry is used to photographically record Lueders’ line patterns on the end faces and to examine creep during maintained constant pressure. Fry’s etch is employed to examine the Lueders’ line patterns at various sections along the length of the cylinders.
Both the experimental techniques are regarded as satisfactory for their particular purpose. Creep or slow movement of Lueders’ lines during maintained constant load is shown to be a significant part of the non-homogeneous yielding mechanism. Lueders’ line patterns vary in detail along the length of the cylinders but the location of the groups is shown to be remarkably consistent.
