Abstract
The stress distribution in a partially yielded, low carbon steel beam was examined by means of X-ray diffraction techniques. Particular attention was given to stress distributions on right cross sections at various locations along the length of the beam under constant moment and in the immediate vicinity of Lueders’ lines, which characterized the yielding process.
The stress at a point was found to be strongly influenced by its position relative to the Lueders’ line pattern. Stress distributions on right cross sections varied between those in agreement with ideally elastic and ideally plastic conditions. The nature of stresses around a Lueders’ line conformed, in general, to the stress field set up by an edge dislocation.
