Abstract
We report studies of the generation of elastic waves by a pulsed laser and the associated spalling of the thin surface films by the corresponding high stresses. Numerical and analytic results from a thermo-elastic model for the stress generation are presented. Qualitative observations of spallation as a function of substrate thickness, film thickness, laser energy, and various parameters governing the source are made. Surface displacement due to the stress wave is measured by optical interferometry and used to infer the stresses on the film interface. The work is conducted with a view towards testing of thin film adhesion under a variety of mixed mode dynamic loading conditions.
