Abstract
In parallel with the work of the materials scientists, mechanicians such as Coleman, Ericksen, Toupin, Truesdell, and Noll constructed a framework for general nonlinear theories of continua, a framework based on three principal ingredients: (i) balance laws (for mass, momentum, energy, etc.), (ii) an imbalance that represents the second law of thermodynamics, (iii) constitutive equations.
