Abstract
Pultrusion is a composite manufacturing process. A variable viscosity resin flow through a collection of fibers in pultrusion processing is examined in this report. Based on the assumption of large activation energy, polymerization is assumed to take place within a thin reaction front. Outside of the reaction front, resin is in the state of either un-cured fluid or gelled solid. Solutions of pressure, resin velocity, and temperature distributions inside the die are obtained and the effect of different parameters on these distributions are investigated. These results can be used to estimate the interior conditions inside the die during pultrusion processing. They may also be used to relate heating conditions, die shape, and interf acial conditions to pulling force at the exit, provided appropriate interfacial friction conditions is known. Expression for drag force is presented with hydrodynamic model. The results obtained here are simple and yet provide insight into the mechanisms that characterize a successful pultrusion operation.
