Abstract
Fatigue results are reported for smooth specimens of 2024-T4 aluminum which illustrate the effect of a varying mean stress on cumulative damage. The mean stress is changed during the test, but the amplitude is held constant. A single change from a zero to a tensile mean or from a tensile to a zero mean gave average damage summations of approximately one. There was no observable effect of varying the relative number of cycles at the two mean stress levels. Multiple changes in mean stress up to approximately ten changes gave damage summations slightly less than one. When more than fifty changes were made in the meas stress level the damage summation was considerably less than one. In the worst cases (about 600 changes in mean level) damage summations of less than 0.5 were obtained.
