Abstract
"Previous studies of fatigue behavior of plain concrete are reviewed and discussed. In particular, the fundamental studies at the University of Illinois into fatigue behavior, shrinkage stresses and strains, effect of rate of load application, dynamic properties, and fracture mechanics are considered . The relations of each of these areas to the fatigue problem and to each other are discussed. For example, it is suggested that the rate of application of the fatigue load is responsible for an apparent strength greater than the static
strength when the curve is extrapolated to one cycle of load. Similarities and differences between static and fatigue failures of plain concrete are discussed . It is proposed that the failure under static and fatigue conditions take place by mechanisms which are physically similar but different in degree or in ""speed"". The macroscopic mechanism is discussed and the frequently observed phenomenon that strains increase rapidly toward the end of a fatigue test is explained by this macroscopic mechanism and the observation that all strain measuring devices have a finite gage length. A microscopic mechanism of static and fatigue failure is proposed which involves minute relocations of particles of cement gel and the gradual transfer of load to primary bonds and mechanical contact forces in the gel structure. It is shown that the proposed mechanism is consistent with observed behavior both in fatigue and in delayed elasticity phenomena. Finally, the current state of knowledge in fatigue of plain concrete is summarized, and specific suggestions for proposed work areas are offered."
