Abstract
An investigation was made to determine the effect of lead additions of 0.17 and 0.25 percent on the tensile properties and fatigue limit of AISI 4340 steel, heat treated to tensile strength levels ranging from 103,000 psi. to 270,000 psi. It was found that, while lead additions had little effect on the tensile properties of the material, the mean fatigue limit of smooth specimens was decreased slightly at all strength levels above 103,000 psi. The results indicate that there is no apparent difference between the effect on the fatigue properties caused by 0.17 percent lead additions compared to 0.25 percent lead additions. Lead additions did not appear to substantially effect the fatigue life of specimens tested at stress levels above the mean fatigue limit.
