Abstract
An attempt is made to quantitatively relate pitting failure of rolling contact surfaces to fatigue properties of the material. Data used in the analysis are for hard 52100 steel, with varying geometries of contact, and tested under normal conditions of lubrication, and temperature. The stress system present in rolling contact, the effect of plastic increase in the rolling track width, the difference in volume of metal stressed from one geometry to another, and the inhibiting effect of the normal compressive stress present on the plane of maximum reversing shear, are considered. In this way it is possible to show that rolling contact fatigue behavior is related to standard fatigue behavior. To some extent, the notions presented aid one in interpretation of existing rolling contact fatigue data, and suggest some promising directions for future research on the subject.
