Abstract
"During the last academic year five lessons of TAM 223 (Mechanical Behavior of Solids) have been presented to 20 students by closed-circuit television to determine the feasibility of regular use of television for this course. Disadvantages of using television for this purpose were found to be: 1) Inability of the student and instructor to ask questions or engage in discussions, 2) Added planning needed to produce a suitable television lesson limits its use to large classes, 3) Relative sizes of objects are difficult for the student to perceive because of the two-dimensional nature of television, 4) In a large television section the student would have no opportunity to operate the instruments and equipment. Advantages of television instruction are as follows: 1) Capacity to save instructional manpower and facilities by teaching large groups with one experienced instructor, 2) Close-ups make it possible for each student to have a ""front row seat,"" 3) Student interest and motivation seems to be increased by the use of television, 4) The extra planning required for television teaching causes an upgrading in the quality of instruction. The advantages seem to be sufficient to warrant further investigation. It it recommended that 60-100 students be taught TAM 223 by television in the fall of 1958, provided suitable equipment and personnel are available to produce the televised lessons and evaluate their effectiveness."
