Abstract
A study was made at the fatigue and static tensile properties of a modified 403 stainless steel (designated as Lapelloy) as influenced by heat treatment hardness, residual stress, surface roughness and various finishing methods. It was found that at a hardness of Rockwell C 30 the strength properties were relatively insensitive to residual stress and surface roughness. Over a range of hardnesses from Rockwell C 20 to 40 the fatigue strength may be correlated with an error of less than ± 10% with surface hardness, core hardness or tensile strength. Metallographic examination of the heat treated samples disclosed soft pools of delta ferrite in the matrix which may be responsible for some loss of fatigue strength at high hardnesses.
