Abstract
The results of a cooperative research program, initiated by Division 4 of the Society of Automotive Engineers, were analyzed in order to evaluate different methods for measurement of residual stress. The residual stress distributions obtained from measurements on six standard specimens by 21 different reseach laboratories using five different methods of analysis were compared. These comparisons provided a means of evaluating the five different methods of analysis and the various experimental techniques employed by each laboratory. Examination of these data indicated that the reproducibility of the methods could be greatly improved upon by standardization of certain experimental techniques. In particular the results obtained by the X-ray Diffraction Method indicate that different laboratories are able to measure residual stresses by this method which will be in agreement within ± 5,000 psi., provided that the experimental techniques used by each laboratory are identical.
