Abstract
Reinforced concrete frame members are usually subjected to a combination of bending, axial compression and shear but in the design for shear the axial force is neglecte. Recognizing the complete absence of experimental evidence on the effects of axial force on the shear strength of reinforced concrete structural members, the Joint ACI-ASCE Committee on Shear and Diagonal Tension outlined an investigation of frame members without web reinforcement. The investigation was carried out at the University of Illinois under the sponsorship of the Reinforced Concrete Research Council in the years 1953-1955.
