Abstract
This report contains a collection of lectures prepared by the author for the graduate course TAM 441 taught during the fall semester of 1987 in the department of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (TAM) at the University of Illinois. This course is directed to first year graduate students in all engineering disciplines and is intended to provide a general mathematical background that is relevant to engineering applications. This course is usually followed by the course TAM 442 in which the subject is continued.
