Abstract
This paper combines the knowledge of microscopic mechanisms with experimental observations to obtain constituitive equations for damaged materials. This is done with copper and an aluminum alloy tested by Leckie and Hayhurst. It is found that when the rate of increase of damage is mathematically separable in expressions for stress and of damage that it is possible to obtain upper bounds to the life of a component.
