Abstract
This report presents the methods and results of an investigation undertaken in order to throw new light on the strength and behavior of reinforced concrete slabs subject to concentrated loads and failing in shear. A series of tests involving 24 square slabs loaded to failure through a column stub at the slab center was a principal part of the investigation. The major variables were: concrete strength, percentage of reinforcement, size of column, conditions of slab support and loading, and distribution of tension reinforcement. Twenty-one of the slabs failed in shear. In addition to reporting the findings of these tests, this study also presents a close examination of 224 previous slab tests reported in the literature, which resulted in shear failure. On the basis of all experimental evidence thus obtained, a hypothesis of slab action is presented, on the basis of which measured ultimate shearing strengths for a variety of slabs may be predicted with a satisfactory accuracy.
