Abstract
The titanium alloy under investigation, Ti-6Af-4V, displays time dependent deformation at room temperature. This time dependent deformation and the resulting damage are incorporated into the existing framework of the fatigue life prediction methods based upon the local strain approach. This methodology has been developed over the last twenty years to analyze the time independent deformation and damage characteristics of notched members subjected to fatigue loading. Smooth specimens controlled according to the Neuber relation are employed to simulate notch root behavior of members made from the alloy under consideration. Analyses of tests conducted with and without hold times provide estimates of the deformation behavior and fatigue life that are within the usual range of accuracy achieved in the local strain approach.
