Abstract
With a standard J-integral test technique and procedure still under development by the ASTM, various alternative procedures are studied to access their effectiveness. A suitable procedure for obtaining a critical J-integral value (JC) is presented. The inter-relationship between the JC value and specimen dimensions is investigated. In the course of the investigation, the correspondence between the J-integral and COD is demonstrated. Finally, the maximum load point on a load-deflection record is assessed as a J-integral measurement point. Since maximum load is demonstrated to be unsuitable as a toughness measurement point, but may still be of interest for design purposes, the factors which influence the maximum load are studied.
