Abstract
This report presents the methods and results of an experimental
and analytical 1mestigat1on undertaken in order to throw new light on
the behavior and strength of reinforced concrete beams failing in shear.
A total of 61 beam specimens were tested, 33 of which were 15-in.
deep restrained beams, 14 were 24-in. deep restrained beams, and 14 were
24-in. deep simple beams. SiXty of these beams failed in shear.
The ma.Jor test variables were: type and depth of beam, concrete
quality• amount of longitudinal reinforcement, and e.rnoUl'lt and inclination
of web reinforcement. E~tione involving these variables were developed,
by means of which the strength of the beams~ be predicted.
A qualitative hypothesis of beatn action after the formation of
diagonal cracks was established, with the aid of which the various ob
served phenomena of beam action may be explained.
