Abstract
"This study provided a finite element stress analysis for adhesive lap joints subjected to a general loading condition which consisted of a tensile force, a shear force and a bending moment applied at the ends of the adherends. Joints with both identical and non-identical adherends were studied. A plane strain state was assumed for the problem. The analysis was divided into three parts. The first part provided a linear elastic stress analysis. The second part provided a refined treatment for the stress field near the singular points (leading corners) by means of existing elastic stress singularity solutions. The third part provided an elastoplastic stress analysis in which all three materials involved were assumed to first exhibit a linear elastic behavior at low stress levels, yield and exhibit a non-linear behavior due to plasticity when stress levels exceeded their respective yield strengths. Eight-node quadratic isoparametric elements, each with nine Gaussian integrating points, were used for the discretization of the structure. An incremental procedure was used to study the non-linear behavior due to plasticity. Within an increment of load the ""initial"" stresses at a nodal point which were released due to plasticity were distributed to the surrounding nodal points by using the initial unchanged stiffness at the beginning of the increment. Stress distributions and concentrations in the adhesive layer for different joint parameters (geometries, material properties and loading conditions) were studied and compared. The reduction of stress concentrations and the redistribution of stresses due to plastic deformations of the adhesive were studied and compared to the linear elastic solution."
