Abstract
The field equations of classical elasticity are linear second order partial differential equations and in conjunction with suitable data form an initial value problem. The equations are generally intractable primarily because of elastic complexity. These difficulties motivate one to seek those elastic materials for which the field equations lead to tractable mathematical analysis.
