Abstract
An analytical model is presented representing the unsteady compressible flow within a circular cylinder. Special initial and boundary conditions make the problem applicable to positive displacement fluid pumps operating at high pressure and high rotational speed. The governing equations are solved on an IBM 360/75 computer via the method of characteristics. The analysis provides information on the transient pressure and velocity fluctuations within the cylinder which is terminated at one end by a moving piston and at the other end by an orifice having a time varying diameter. The transient flow through the orifice plays a dominant role in characterizing the flow conditions within the cylinder and is analyzed via a numerical integration of the unsteady Bernoulli equation.
Various parameters and flow conditions are investigated as to their effect on transient fluctuations within the cylinder. These include changes in cross sectional area in the cylinder and in the discharge line, changes in the port plate geometry (affecting the rate at which the cylinder is exposed to pressure exterior to the pump), temperature of the working fluid, various aspects of the transient orifice flow, precompression and preexpansion. The calculations presented indicate that under certain conditions significant reduction in the transient pressure oscillations may be achieved.
