Abstract
Morley's one-dimensional theory for the propagation of elastic waves in curved beams is examined and the governing equations, recast in a form suitable for the analysis of pulse propagation problems, are developed using the method of characteristics. These ordinary differential equations are written in finite difference form and are solved numerically subject to the appropriate initial and boundary conditions. Propagation of a half-sine moment pulse in a curved beam and propagation of initially longitudinal pulses in straight-curved beam assemblages are investigated numerically and experimentally. Simulated isochromatic fringe patterns constructed by a Calcomp plotter are compared with actual dynamic photoelastic patterns, and remarkably good agreement is found between theory and experiment in all the cases investigated.
