Abstract
For quenched and tempered SAE 4340 steel, the inelastic strains measured during complex stress-strain histories are observed to be larger than would be estimated from constant amplitude test results. A cumulative fatigue damage procedure previously proposed is modified to account for this history dependence. Actual and calculated lives are compared for a variety of complex history fatigue tests on unnotched axially loaded specimens. To calculate fatigue lives using the modified procedure, it is necessary to have a stress-inelastic strain relationship obtained from constant amplitude fatigue tests. Initial overstraining at intermediate lives, and both initial and periodic overstraining at long lives, are employed for the constant amplitude tests so that the results are applicable to complex histories.
