Abstract
Engineering Mechanics majors presently take two senior level research and design orientated courses (TAM 293 and TAM 294) during the academic year. These courses are designed to develop the student’s research potential by exciting his desire to excel in self-direction, intellectual curiosity, accomplishment, and creativity. The student has the opportunity to assume individual responsibility for the selection, development, execution, completion, and evaluation of an experimental and/or analytical investigation of any phase of engineering science.
The papers in this volume were presented on June 5, 1971 at the University of Illinois at the Tenth Engineering Mechanics Symposium. These papers were selected from a group of 13 papers submitted at the completion of the TAM 293-294 course sequence. Professors J. P. Gallagher and J. W. Phillips were in charge of these two research and development courses. Other members of the T&AM staff assisted individual students and are acknowledged in the separate papers.
