Abstract
The problem of fatigue notched members is analyzed and experimentally investigated using equations derived from a rule proposed by Neuber. These equations relate the nonlinear and history dependent stress-strain behavior of notch roots to the applied nominal stress and strain. They also suggest control conditions under which smooth specimens may be made to simulate the stress-strain and fatigue behavior of the metal at a notch root. Fatigue life curves of notched aluminum alloy plates subjected to O-max loading are accurately simulated with smooth specimens. These smooth specimens experience cycle-dependent hardening and relaxation of mean stress, the same phenomena which occur at notch roots. Use of the method to simulate other more complicated types of loading is discussed and a simple way to estimate notch behavior from monotonic and cyclic stress-strain curves and fatigue data is described.
