Abstract
A theoretical and experimental investigation on the fracture criterion for orthotropic plates subjected to compression, where failure is characterized by rapid crack extension, is undertaken.
Three mathematical models are presented to study the influence of the frictional tractions created between the crack surfaces by the compressive force and crack displacements. These models represent the three possible cases of relative displacement of the crack surfaces, they are: 1) the case where relative displacements exist over the entire crack surfaces, 2) the case where relative crack surface displacement does not exist, and 3) the case where relative displacements exist over a portion of the crack surface. Solutions to the boundary value problems for these models give the elastic stress distributions in closed forms. In particular, these solutions are specialized for the neighborhood of the crack tip and examined in the spirit of fracture mechanics. Parameters which characterize the intensity of the crack-tip stress distribution for the three models are isolated and defined as stress intensity factors.
Experimental investigations using Scotch-ply unidirectional fiberglass reinforced plates are designed to observe the modes of failure, to explore the validity of the hypotheses formed in the analysis, and to select from the three proposed models the one which is most capable of representing the physical phenomena.
The domain in compression where fracture mechanics is applicable is determined and a phenomenological criterion of fracture is obtained.
