Abstract
The effect of temperature on a number of phenomena associated with cycle dependent deformation was studied in the temperature range 77.4°K to 295°K. Experiments were performed on annealed OFHC copper under conditions of a static tensile stress plus a superposed fully reversed cyclic shear strain. The chief consideration was the effect of temperature on the minimum cyclic creep rate. Also studied was the effect of temperature on transient cyclic creep, a relationship between minimum cyclic creep rate and fatigue life, and a relationship between plastic hysteresis energy and fatigue life.
On the basis of experimental results it has been shown that a variation in temperature has a significant effect on the minimum cyclic creep rate in the low temperature region. The shape of the total deformation curve for cyclic creep is qualitatively similar to a creep curve of ordinary time and temperature dependent creep. The transient cyclic creep was similar to ordinary transient creep, but since temperature affected the relation for transient cyclic creep, it was concluded that there was at least one difference between cyclic and ordinary transient creep. It was also shown that a variation in temperature has an effect on a relation between total plastic hysteresis energy to failure and fatigue life, but has no observable effect on an empirical relation between minimum cyclic creep rate and fatigue life.
