Abstract
This investigation presents a theoretical and an experimental analysis of the creep of rectangular- and T- cross section curved beams in pure bending. Two theories are developed in order to include and exclude radial stress effects. The theories are based on infinitesimal deformation theory and use the total strain theory, incompressibility and assume that plane sections remain plane during creep. It is also assumed that stresses at a point are independent of time. The stress-strain-time relation is assumed to be represented by an isochronous stress-strain diagram which is approximated by an arc hyperbolic sine function. The theories allow the determination of tangential and radial stresses in addition to the radial displacement of a circular line element.
Experimental data were obtained for high density polyethylene rectangular curved beams having Rc/c ratios of 1. 53, 2. 45, 3. 22 and 4. 43. The T-sections had Rc/c ratios of 2. 34 and 2.47. A load history was applied. The theories and experiments were in agreement within ±10 percent.
