Abstract
This report covers a study of the decrease in the strength of members (or the “stress-raising” effect) produced by compound notches (notches comprising grooves superposed upon fillets).
Full fillets were cut as transition sections at changes in width of a steel plate, and a small semi-circular groove was superposed on each fillet. Static tensile loads were applied to the plate; from measurements of the strains at the roots of the grooves the elastic stress concentration factors were calculated. It was found that the experimental stress concentration factor for the compound notch was higher in every case than the theoretical stress concentration factor for either the fillet alone or the groove alone. The ratio of the experimental stress concentration factor for the compound notch to the product of the theoretical factors for the groove and fillet alone ranged from .79 to .89.
Rotating beam fatigue tests were also made to determine the fatigue strength of ¼ in. and ¾ in. diameter shafts of SAE 4340 steel with fillets, grooves (both semi-circular and V-shaped), and grooves superposed upon fillets. The ratio of the fatigue strength reduction factor for the compound notch to the product of the strength reduction factors for the fillet alone and for the groove alone varied from .85 to 1.12 for the various groups of experiments.
