Abstract
The determination of the response of a launcher to the applied loads is greatly simplified if one is able to neglect certain of the inertia terms in the governing differential equations.
In this report an attempt is made to evaluate the effect of such approximations in a much simpler system; namely, a concentrated mass moving across a taut string. While the results are not directly applicable to any particular launching system, they do indicate certain trends and behaviors. This is turn, helps to broaden the insight of the investigator when he is confronted with more complex problems.
We particularly consider two problems; namely,
a.) a mass moving on a massless string,
b.) a mass moving on a string with mass.
Deflection-time curves are obtained in each case and an evaluation of the effect of various approximations is then made.
