Abstract
The purpose of my project is to provide an analysis of the usage of folk elements in one
of the standard twentieth-century violin sonatas, George Enescu’s Violin Sonata No. 3 in A
minor, Op. 25. His last work in this particular genre, Sonata No. 3 is one of the representative
works into which Enescu integrated Romanian folk styles and tunes. My aim is to examine the
fiddle tunes and styles quoted and integrated into the Sonata, while focusing on the specific
violinistic techniques required. I will provide an explanation of the techniques and show how
each one of them can be achieved and properly executed. I hope that my research will benefit
musicians—especially classical violinists—who are not familiar with Romanian folk music for
the violin.
