Abstract

Increasing urbanization and runoff in Champaign-Urbana have led to problems of pollution and flooding in a natural drainageway, Boneyard Creek, which resulted in large annual mosquito populations originating from the creek. Recent engineering overhauls and environmental restoration efforts seemed to abate these factors, but no assessment had been done to verify this. This study aims to fill a gap by providing a comprehensive analysis of Boneyard Creek's potential mosquito habitat and potential socioeconomic factors that could place people in the area surrounding Boneyard Creek at risk for contracting West Nile Virus to the current authorities in Mosquito Surveillance and Abatement in Champaign-Urbana at the Public Health District.
