Abstract

This report provides an overview of the extensive presence of brownfields in the Southeast Side of the city of Chicago. In recent years, hundreds of acres of land in the Southeast Side of Chicago were identified as severely contaminated, which is a major cause for concern, primarily amongst residents that are experiencing the negative effects. This report focuses on the presence of these brownfields in connection to its history as an industrial center in order to argue for a policy-based environmental justice approach to remediation; a discussion of the barriers to remediation processes; a discussion of environmental racism and injustice; an analysis of the consequences of concentrated industrial land uses; a critique of existing policies and programs; and a discussion of the emergence of grassroots organizing and advocacy in the Southeast Side. The goal is for the report to be a reference point for community members and the 10th Ward Aldermanic team, to aid in advocating for the implementation of brownfield restoration projects and further environmental protections in the Far Southeast Side and other heavily industrialized communities.
