Abstract

The unprecedented public health safety guidelines due to the COVID-19 pandemic have forced public libraries to reengineer their services. In addition to infrastructural adjustments, libraries nationwide have adapted to the guidelines while attempting to continuously provide services through virtual consultations and curb-side pick-up. In addition to implementing creative ways to provide services safely, these unparalleled times present an opportunity for libraries to enhance engagement with communities to assess community needs, and design and deliver services. We propose that librarians embrace methods of community engagement used by community-based researchers, particularly for health and wellness assessments and projects. Therefore, the future of LIS education should include learnings and approaches from engaged research, especially for assessments and services that require technology access and skills. We argue that lessons learned from CBPR about building relationships that transcend projects can improve community assessments and program development for public libraries and the communities they serve.
