Abstract
Virtual Reality (VR) applications often place a strong emphasis on the visual domain to convey information to users. Acoustic virtual reality is still vastly underutilized. This is partially due to challenges in rendering acoustic sources with spatial properties. To create a realistic acoustic scene, it is necessary to measure each user’s head-related transfer function (HRTF), which is a challenging and tedious process. We explore methods to improve the spatial acoustic experience in the absence of personalized HRTFs. We present a system composed of a calibration process and an application. We evaluate the performance at each step to demonstrate the effect of calibration and measure the usability of a visual audio display application.
