Abstract
Over the last decade remarkable economic growth in China has contributed to dramatic increases in demand for food, feed and fuel. Economic growth in India has similarly driven changes in global food and fuel demand. With a population of almost a billion and widespread poverty, the economic situation in sub-Saharan Africa is in many respects similar to that which prevailed in South and East Asia 30 years ago. Should Africa experience the economic growth seen in China or India, it would likely have dramatic impacts on food and fuel systems. In the absence of widespread income growth in Africa, the continent is likely to remain marginal as a consumer of food, feed and fuel.
