- Abstract
- "Cynthia Hoyle - Transportation Planning Consultant, Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District. The community of Champaign-Urbana, IL is working to create a sustainable future. Estimates currently suggest that approximately 30% of the community's GHG emissions come from transportation with single occupancy vehicles being the major contributor. The community has 25% of trips to work made by sustainable modes - walking, bicycling, and transit. The goal is to increase this to 35% by 2015. Efforts have focused on: * How to create mobility and encourage mode shift, * How to create a more sustainable community through innovative planning and land-use * Achieving energy independence and offsetting carbon and contaminant releases to the environment. The community is implementing a long range transportation plan with the following goals: * Less congestion, more mobility * Less dependence on cars, more use of alternative (sustainable) transportation modes (walking, bicycling, public transit) * Less fringe development, more core development * Less new construction, more transportation system management. The Mobility Implementation Plan (miPLAN) is to be completed in the fall of 2009 and will provide a Mobility Management Framework, selection of a preferred mobility scenario, a preferred investment plan for future development, and a ""Green Corridors"" study. The final product will provide the community with a plan for future growth that will provide residents with choices in transportation modes and housing while reducing costs to local governments through the most efficient use of scarce resources."
