Abstract
Diverse College and University administrators along with International, Underrepresented, and diverse Students of color find employment, enroll and graduate from higher education institutions across North America and Europe in large numbers. They face significant challenges and struggle with various issues during their time at these institutions. Many of these challenges include marginalization, organizational acculturation issues, and isolation because of diminished access to affinity groups at predominantly White institutions.
This session features stories of diverse administrators, underrepresented and international students of color and their journey through Western higher education systems. Panel contributors and session participants will engage in dialogue about strategies adopted to navigate the complexities of their similar but yet uniquely nuanced lived experiences at predominantly White postsecondary institutions.
This session also aims to serve as a platform for all Underrepresented ethnic and ability group self identified members of CIES as well as the broader membership of CIES to create a networked community of support beyond CIES 2019, where issues unique to those name above can be discussed and career/job opportunities shared among members, for the professional development of all.
The discussion will also include how UREAG can be a platform to come together and to share experiences and how to navigate and overcome challenges.
