Abstract
This dissertation explores 18 settings of Harfenspieler poems from Wilhelm Meisters
Lehrjahre by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe through the Baroque-era concepts of Affektenlehre
(doctrine of affections) and Figurenlehre (theory of musical figures). This method of integrating
Baroque theories into the analysis of Romantic music, which is not widely considered in
scholarship, will be the focus of this paper. The thesis includes the historical background of
Affektenlehre and Figurenlehre, relying heavily on Johann Mattheson’s principles, and a
synopsis of the novel by Goethe to ensure a clear characterization of the Harper, along with the
translations of the poems. I also present detailed analyses of these settings, based on one of the
categories of Figurenlehre (figures of representation and depiction). By proposing this analytical
method, I hope to widen the perspectives of interpreting Romantic lied, allowing underlying
ideas to be understood by performers and enabling the desired affections of the text to be
conveyed effectively to the audience.
