Abstract
"In 1966, Eugenio Coseriu published his article ""Tomo y me voy"" that dealt with the construction [‘take and’ + verb], which expresses the onset of an action, often with a sense of surprise or disapproval. He gathered examples from about 30 languages from a variety of sources and inspired future research (by Morreale, Kiparsky, Fehling, Larsson, Vannebo, García Sánchez and others). This presentation is a more comprehensive view in order to complete the work he began and also with the goal of exploring the origins of the phrase. I present data from more than sixty languages – twice as many as originally identified by Coseriu – all across Europe (with the main exception being Celtic), including Indo-European, Finno-Ugric, and Turkic languages as well as others, such as Basque and Maltese. The results of this study suggest that a single origin in Biblical Greek, as proposed by Coseriu, seems unlikely, and that although this construction has clearly spread extensively via contact, it may have independent origins in two or more clusters.
