Abstract
Marcel Tabuteau (1887-1966) and Lucien Capet (1873-1928) were musical descendants
of the French Tradition and known for their absolute goal of artistry through refined techniques.
Tabuteau and Capet believed that the greatest source of a musician’s talent rests in his or her
ability to phrase convincingly and effectively, which stems from meticulous study and precise
understanding of the grammatical structures of phrases in music. Their pedagogy served to
enlighten generations of musicians. The goal of this research is to develop an intuitive way of
approaching musical phrasing so that string players can feel more confident in their ability to
effectively articulate musical ideas in a similar fashion to those espoused by oboist Marcel
Tabuteau and violinist Lucien Capet. The ability to formulate cohesive musical ideas and
implement them technically allows the performer to bring the music to life.
