Abstract
Composers and percussionists are always looking for new ways to make sounds. The snare drum is at the forefront of this exploration currently, as it was throughout the twentieth century. There have been many solos written for the snare drum that involve techniques that are outside of the norm of what a percussionist might generally practice. This scholarly essay explores both older and modern snare drum solos to find these techniques. There are also techniques used by drum set players that are out of the norm. I researched video and audio recordings of a few drummers that adapt such innovations. I will discuss and break down how these extended techniques are typically performed, how they can be learned, and from whence they came (if possible to know). I have written pedagogical exercises and etudes to help learn these techniques. In addition to the research, writing, and exercises, I have commissioned a new snare drum solo from composer Andrew Binder using some of the techniques discussed as well as a few of my own design.
