Abstract

My research is dedicated to understanding the wind loading of structures generated by thunderstorms. The image shows a cube designed to sustain extreme winds and “face the storms” to provide us with invaluable wind loading data during thunderstorms. This particular storm was a Derecho event that caused a tremendous amount of damage on August 8, 2020. This event was one of the costliest weather disasters in 2020, with an estimated $11 billion in damage, also causing unfortunate fatalities. The data we collected during this deployment will help us better understand wind loading during thunderstorms and improve the current design standards against these events. This image is an excellent reminder that we have to face the problems head-on to make unprecedented changes in the world.
