Abstract

In 2015, I studied abroad in England, where I took a class called Cultures of everyday life. In this class, I was taught about extraordinary (important) and infraordinary (unimportant) moments that make up our everyday lives. While walking one day in England, I noticed a black gate with gold plating. Commonly ignored, forgotten, and dismissed, I took a photo of this gate to 1) capture its beauty and 2) bring attention to the mundane and obvious. To me, this image reminds us that too often, obvious things are ignored and forgotten, while other objects and structures, like Big Ben, receive more attention. As a social researcher, we must attempt to explore and explain social phenomena that dictate the world as we see. My work centers on the voices and experiences of former participants of STEM pre-college programs. I believe these lived experiences are untapped, infraordinary data mines that could be extraordinary data sources. In my work, I firmly believe that through focused attention, one can bring awareness to the infraordinary obvious to gain new insights and change/ improve upon our relationship with existing systems and structures.
