- Abstract
- As a master’s student in violin performance, most of my regular opportunities to showcase my work have been cancelled. Like everyone else, musicians have had to find ways to circumvent the obstacles we’re facing right now. For many folks in my field, that entails a lot of time recording music individually and combining it with others’ recorded parts, requiring renewed focus from everybody on listening in order to balance and mesh perfectly together. The learning curve of acquiring this new skillset has been steep but rewarding, and, fortunately for me, this process has led to projects and discussions that I likely wouldn’t have otherwise had the chance to be a part of. In my photo, the sheet music used as the background is taken from pieces I’ve studied or performed over the past year which challenge stereotypes about classical music and the people who create it. I included the score of William Grant Still’s Symphony No.1, titled “Afro-American” and his string quartet “Danzas de Panama”.
